After Tummy Tuck Stretch Mark Removal
When women’s body start growing during pregnancy, the skin stretch and may notices some lines which are called stretch marks. Here are some alternatives for removing stretch marks…
As your body grows to accommodate your baby, your skin must stretch. If you are like about half of all pregnant women, you may start to notice lines on your breasts and belly. These lines, which are called stretch marks, are actually tiny scars caused by the skin stretching out so fast that it tears beneath the surface layer. Women who have very fair or very dark skin are the most inclined to develop visible stretch marks.
Stretch marks usually appear as reddish-purple, slightly depressed lines in the skin. Fortunately, they will spontaneously improve in appearance as the reddish color fades. They eventually return to a normal skin color, although they do remain depressed. They most often appear on the abdomen but other areas of skin that stretch during pregnancy, such as the breasts, hips, flanks, buttocks, upper arms and thighs are also susceptible to stretch marks. This cannot be helped as we pile on the pounds with each passing trimester. Higher levels of hormones also disrupt our skin’s protein balance, making it thinner than usual.
The resulting scars are permanent but some women do notice that their stretch marks fade to a certain extent and become less noticeable alter they give birth.
Although stretch marks are a fact of pregnancy, some expectant mums are lucky to have more elastic skin so they do not experience them at all.
Stretch marks cannot be prevented but they can be minimized by the following precautionary measures:

- Avoid sudden or excessive weight gain. Starting a gentle and sensible exercise regime may help you tone up your underlying muscles and improve your overall appearance. Good eating habits throughout your pregnancy can also prevent you from putting on excessive weight which can exaggerate stretch marks.
- Constant application of massaging creams, oils or lotions will help the skin feel suppler although, again, they do not prevent stretch marks from occurring. With time, the lines face to fine streaks closer to your own skin color. .
- If stretch marks are of recent onset, laser treatment can be effective. It produces improvement after only one or two treatments, even though additional treatments are sometimes required to obtain maximal results. The treatments were done with an excimer laser on women with stretch marks on their thighs, upper arms, or buttocks. Most patients had six to nine treatments, each lasting five to ten minutes. The stretch marks became less noticeable in all of the women, and the marks kept their repigmentation when they were checked after six months. However, the laser did not change the texture, indentations, or other aspects of stretch marks.
- Lasers such as the excimer laser, pulsed dye laser and the full or fractional resurfacing laser have been used by doctors to help fade stretch marks with varying degrees of success. A series of treatments may be required for visible results. As the pulsed dye laser reduces capillaries and inflammation from red stretch marks while stimulating collagen growth, it is most effective when used on early reddish or brownish stretch marks. Some doctors have used resurfacing laser to renew the affected skin and find that the appearance of stretch marks improves after a series of sessions. The excimer laser appears to be more effective for the repigmentation of older, white colored stretch marks, making them less noticeable after a series of treatments.
- Radiofrequency devices such as thermage may also help lessen the appearance of stretch marks. Such devices tighten loose, saggy abdominal skin in post-pregnancy women. Thermage procedure is an in-clinic treatment performed as a single session, and continuing improvements in the skin can be seen up to six months after one treatment.
- Surgery is the only way to successfully remove stretch marks. For example, a tummy tuck will remove stretch marks on the abdomen. Such surgery, however, leaves a scar.
